Fifty Shades Trilogy Review
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
After much egging on by...pretty much every woman in my life...I decided to give in and read the Fifty Shades Trilogy. I don't usually jump on band-wagon books, but the near frenzy about these books (even by friends and relatives who rarely pick up a book) had me curious. So I read them and...
Face it, these are not literary masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination. It's gratuitous sex and the ages-old themes of power, money, virgins and innocence lost. In fact, they're pretty much written with the expertise and clout of a nerdy college freshman.
Summary: Recent college graduate and consummate virgin, Anastasia Steele ends up interviewing worldly, wealthy Christian Grey for her campus newspaper. He's a closeted Dominant with 15 former Submissives under his belt. He enjoys full control and beating his women. He's taken with Anastasia's understated beauty and innocence and begins a relentless, stalker-like quest to make her number 16. Instead he ends up falling for her, as he introduces her into his twisted world of Bondage and Domination. Their unlikely love story ensues.
After I got past the excessive use of clichés and the elementary writing style, I was able to get into the core of the story and the characters, which after 3 books, were clearly developed.
The story itself is interesting. It will keep you hooked in. The sex scenes are repetitive and bordering on boring. The center of it is a truly unhappy tale of child sex abuse, outcomes and life changes.
If you can tolerate weak writing but a decent story, then this is for you. There is a movie in the works and rumored additional books from the point of view of the man in the story. This has been a money maker for author EL James for sure.
